Recreation

It is said that the Grand Junction area has more opportunities for outdoor recreation within a 100-mile radius of its boundaries than any other city in the Western U.S. Don’t take our word for it, come and see for yourself.

Within our communities there are many parks and facilities available to the public. The Colorado River runs through the center of the Grand Junction area and provides first class rafting and kayaking for all abilities, and a riverfront trail system for hikers and bicyclists. Spectator sports are numerous throughout the year. Grand Junction is the proud host of the National Junior College Baseball World Series, where the ten best teams in the nation gather at Lincoln Park, Stocker Stadium and Suplizio Baseball Field to decide the national championship. Four 18-hole golf courses are available for year- round golfing, including the recently completed Redlands Mesa Golf Community.

The beautiful plateau and canyon, high-country of the Colorado National Monument, the first National Park in Colorado, rises more than 2,000 feet above the valley floor. Its incredible scenery can be experienced through hiking, driving, climbing, and cross-country skiing, all within minutes of the city. Adjacent BLM lands and wilderness areas also provide similar recreational opportunities.

The Grand Junction area, and in particular, Fruita is renowned for its superb mountain biking trails. Often described as mountain biking’s ‘Magic Kingdom’, this is a dream destination for visitors and locals alike.

Nearby, the Grand Mesa, the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, rises to over 10,000 feet, providing ample snow for Powderhorn Ski Resort, and a large network of cross-country ski trails. Just 40 minutes drive from Grand Junction, the ‘Mesa’ is also popular for its fishing, camping, hiking and mountain biking during the summer. World class skiing, is also close by. Aspen, Snowmass, Vail and Telluride are all within a couple of hours drive.
